WAC9500 Vs WAC5500

Based on the customer feedback, both seems to be doing equally effective job in filtering the air. The main difference is the WAC9500 offers 4-stage air cleaning (Anti-microbial hair collecting Pre-Filter, True-HEPA Filtration, Washable Advanced Odor Control Carbon Filtration, and PlasmaWave™ Technology) while the WAC5500 only has three stages (Odor Control Carbon Pre-filter, True-HEPA Filtration, and PlasmaWave™ Technology). So by spending a little extra you will get the added level of filtration.

Both Winix 5500 and the Winix 5300 are certified for rooms up to 350 square feet. The CADR numbers of both are better than this model. That being said, the Winix 9500 Ultimate Pet has a better filtration system. Furthermore, the 5300 model does not include a remote control to turn off the PlasmaWave.

Dust and Odor Removal

The Winix WAC9500 is advertised to offer advanced odor control carbon filtration. Lots of people have been pleased with its ability to reduce unpleasant pet odors and cooking smells. Some people have also reported that it works well cleaning cigarette smoke. When the windows are closed during the winter months and you spend more time indoors, an air purifier that does a good job of removing offending household odors can be your best friend.

More than that, this Korean made air purifier has dust, odor and light sensors. Both the dust and odor sensors show elevated levels of air quality – green (acceptable dust and odor levels), orange (high levels), and red (very high levels). It automatically detects dust and odors and goes to high mode when needed.

Some people have commented that the dust sensor does not work as expected. However. based on the customer feedback, the odor detection system works effectively noticing odors in the air. What is more important is it seems to do a good job with both odor and particle removal.

Filtration

If you are around serious pollutants, then consider investing a better, more expensive product. Although the WAC9500 uses a variety of filtration technologies to handle pet hair, animal dander, household odors and allergens, it is not for serious chemical or gas removal. Having said that, many asthma and allergy sufferers have reported that it really helps with their problem.

The 9500 does have a True HEPA air filter that captures 99.99% of airborne pollutants, pet dander and allergens as small as 0.3 microns, which is great. The Plasmawave ionizer can be toggled on or off by the remote or by pushing the power button briefly. People have also found that the cassette-type filter is easy to remove and clean. The filter change indicator will signal when to replace the filter cartridge.

One primary disadvantage of this air purifier is that the premium filter cassette that ships with this model is expensive to replace compared to those of similar products. Fortunately, according to a number of reviewers, the HF-300 replacement filter set which is designed to fit the Fellowes AP-300PH air purifier, also fits in this model’s filter bay. It is not a perfect replacement but it costs much less than then the original Winix cartridge.

Sleep Mode

Four fan speeds, low, medium, high, and turbo, are available. When Auto Sleep Mode is activated this unit will provide the lowest fan setting and a dimmed display panel when the light sensor detects darkness. It is supposed to revert to its previous settings when the room is light. This feature is a good idea. However, according to a number reviewers, the light sensor does not work well. An adjustable ambient light sensor would make it a better unit.

Power Consumption

This air purification system is energy star rated. Having an energy efficient device is a good thing as energy prices continue to rise. In the low mode, the cleaner uses very little power, about 6 watts or so. It consumes only 70 watts in the high mode. Compare this with the Surround Air XJ3800 that uses 31 watts in the low mode.

Not only very energy efficient, many reviewers have also reported it is barely audible on low fan speed and is still fairly quiet on high. It is not totally silent. According to some reviewers, turbo setting is much louder than high. However it is not a big deal to the majority. For those who are very sensitive to noise, especially in the bedroom at night, this unit deserves serious consideration.

Design

Measuring 16.5″ (W) x 8.9″ (D) x 21.9″ (H), it is relatively large. With no grip or carrying handle, it is awkward to pick up if you plan on moving it from room to room. The plus point is many reviewers have keenly expressed their appreciation for the build quality and design of this air purifier. It has a short 1-year warranty. However, it has a proven track record. The attractive design can easily blend well with contemporary, modern decor of interiors.

The Verdict

For people who live with dogs or cats in the house and want an efficient air cleaner at a reasonable cost, then the WAC9500 Pet Ultimate is worth considering. The cleaning power, although not the best in the below $300 class, appears to be very good. For many families with or without pets, this air purifier will meet their needs nicely.
